Early Thoughts & Opinions
Previous to this past week, I had not seen any films in the Saw series, but you (the fans) wanted me to review VI so I accepted and I am pretty glad that i did. A franchise like Saw may be over hyped and drawn out, but each film offers something new with respect to the last. As for this sixth installment, I do not think that it will fall short much like the steady decline which we’ve seen since the first. Former editor for Saw 1-5, Kevin Greutert, was crowned director of 6 as a great candidate to carry this series. In my opinion, changing directors throughout a series not shooting back to back is idiotic and the main cause of unsuccessful sequels. However, Kevin has the most experience with the Saw films through editing, but he hasn’t been rehired to take on Saw VII, leaving me wondering if the studio feels that he’s difficult to work with. Regardless, the film looks great from the trailers and I really hope that this is the film that can get the Saw franchise back on track. Not to mention that they’ve stuck with the same composer (Charlie Clouser) since the beginning, whom I believe has done for Saw what John Carpenter did for Halloween. Lionsgate is very secretive about how much content they release on these films, so I cannot truly speculate much about the traps and such, but I believe that they realized and addressed the fan concerns and opinions of the franchise and have done their best to prevent another inferior film.
My Review
“Let the game begin!” Lionsgate released Saw VI this weekend and although its’ past sequels may discourage most, do not let this one pass you by! Saw VI is best described as a combination of Saw I, III, and V. To add a bit more detail, it takes the one room/two victim prison from Saw I, the main victim/multi-test/victim redemption trial from III, and the Law Enforcement point of view (POV) from V. The story is well developed to include a stronger perspective of Jigsaw (John) and his accomplices through a series of flashbacks, some new and some extended versions from previous films. Not to mention, NEW and EXCITING TRAPS! If you thought that they had exhausted all forms of torture and mutilation then you are mistaken! Saw VI is certain to keep you cringing on the edge of your seat as John’s new victims are put through new and original forms of self mutilation and torture.
Although this doesn’t top my personal favorite in the series, Saw II. It is definitely better than the last 3 in the series and it will give fans everything they could possibly expect and more from such a late volume in the series. I was a little skeptical that they were running low on trap ideas, but there were some quite unique contraptions that suit the story well. Kevin Greutert did a great job directing and it is a shame that he will not be directing Saw VII. The tone was perfect along with the cinematography and editing, done by someone other than Kevin for the first time, which give it that true Saw feel. Honestly, I don’t have much to knit pick about. My early thoughts were correct, and Lionsgate certainly took the initiative to revive this franchise. If you’re a fan of the early films, I strongly suggest that you watch the rest (or at least Saw V) first and then go see VI and all of its gruesome glory on the big screen. Then please share you’re thoughts via comments below.

so can you sleep well at night after watching 6 saw movies in a span of 3-4 days (don’t exactly know)?
Yeah, personally I don’t think that the Saw movies are scary. If anything, I think that the brutal torture is what gets to people the most. If it weren’t for the graphic brutality, the films would be Drama/Suspense.
Agreeeeeed.
