Early Thoughts & Opinions

As this is a re-release I can’t make many assumptions. Toy Story is a classic, and one of my favorite childhood movies. I can only hope that Disney isn’t going overboard with the Digital 3D bandwagon that they seem to have instilled. Usually Digital 3D re-releases or films with post-production 3D are rather disappointing, but even though the thought of a limited 2 week release worries me a little, I don’t really see how this film could be worse then the original.

My Review

An adventure that remains fun for the whole family! This re-release of Toy Story 1 & 2 brought me straight back to my childhood and kept me entertained for the full length double feature! I was worried that the 3D might be a little over the top and take away from the classic that I have come to know and love, but I could not have been more wrong. They gave these films just the right amount of 3D and kept it subtle, but at the same time very noticeable. It brought the characters and their environment to life and, in my opinion, is the way that Toy Story was originally meant to be seen. I recently returned from a trip to Universal Orlando which featured about 5-10 different 3D attractions and they were not nearly as sharp and visually appealing as this film. They are really beginning to perfect this technology, and I predict big things for the future of animated and live films.

On the technical breakdown, I did find that they adjusted the sound at parts, adding an “echo” which I believe was intended to add more depth to the dialogue as well, but it certainly wasn’t perfected and really stuck out. On a side note, they have about a 15 minute intermission between the films (including credits) that is worth sticking around for if you can. Although it is mostly filled with simple trivia for children, it offers some early production design concepts and screen tests for the original Woody and Buzz. All in all, I think that if it were not a double feature it would be on the cusp of 3D ticket worthy ($10.50 here…) but since you get 3 hours of entertainment I think that the price was well justified.
